Curriculum

Lincolnshire Wolds Federation strives to provide a broad balanced curriculum that supports our students to be independent, prepared for adult life and enable them to make a positive contribution to society and the world in which they live.

Our aim within LWF is to be a centre of excellence through provision that uses innovative and effective techniques in educating and supporting outstanding lifelong learning.  At LWF we provide an inspiring, purposeful and personalised education for all, every day, in order to support learning for life and working for the future.

Our curriculum offer includes the formal requirements of the national curriculum and also a range of extra-curricular activities that we organise to enrich the opportunities and experiences for our students.  Our curriculum and ethos also supports a ‘hidden curriculum’; what the students learn from each other, the way they are treated and can be expected to be treated.  We strive to support our students to develop into independent, positive, responsible adults, who can work and co-operate with others, so that they achieve their true potential.

The curriculum is individualised, creative, innovative and flexible allowing for the needs of each student to be met. It aims to promote the social, moral, spiritual and cultural development of the students as well as their intellectual and physical development in line with our key values.

Phonics

Phonics is taught following the Letters and Sounds or Read, write, Ink, based programmes and is delivered to ability based groups and delivered in a multi-sensory approach to suit the needs of our learners.  Some classes deliver this through streaming whilst others use sessions within class to deliver the learning.  We assess Phonics when students enter the school and regularly across the year, assessed by the class team who will recommend if a student needs to move up, down or within a phase to a different group dependent on their individual needs and progress.  This is to support not only their understanding of the phonics phonemes but also to assess the way they apply these skills in to their independent work.   All staff receive regular phonics training, either in house or through skilled external support.

Reading

Reading is an important part of the Literacy curriculum.  LWF uses phonics including the Phonics reading scheme Bug Club to help assist and embed phoneme skills and students are listened to in school on a regular basis and also have a home reading diary to show their progress and areas to work on.  All students are asked to explore books, print, including magazines, newspapers and read at home and any comments from home are also encouraged in the reading diary. LWF’s approach to reading encompasses the wider world, environment and life skills. Students make regular visits to the local library to encourage a love and interest in wider reading whilst promoting valuable life skills.  Guided reading sessions are also used to develop not only students reading skills but also their interpretation and understanding.  Some students receive more targeted interventions, as appropriate and at different times in order to support their progress.

British Values

Throughout the curriculum students experience key learning linked to British values. Giving our students an understanding of British values is vital in ensuring that they can achieve within the key values outlined above. All students are given a clear understanding of the democratic processes through the work of our school council; demonstrating to students the importance of active participation, listening to and representing the views of others within the school community. Opportunities to experience a range of cultures are built into multi-sensory experiential learning experiences that are reinforced and supported through discussion. The school vision of creating ‘an inspiring, purposeful and personalised education for all, every day, in order to support learning for life and working for the future, ensures we are accountable to the following shared values to enable students to Dream, Believe and Achieve. These reinforce the core British values of mutual respect and tolerance of differences, where the personalised experiences created for students allow us to challenge and support them in understanding the community, country and world in which they live.  As restorative school's we take a restorative approach to resolving conflict and preventing harm. Restorative approaches enable those who have been affected/harmed to convey the impact of this to those responsible, and for those responsible to acknowledge this impact and take steps to put it right which further supports our students. 

Within LWF, these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

Democracy

We are a Rights Respecting school. Each year the students decide upon their class rules and the rights and responsibilities associated with these. Responsibilities are also supported through the LWF values of visionary, empowering, approachable, consistent and through our shared rule of ‘right place, right time, right thing’.

Students have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. We have an elected student council on both sites that has the opportunity to meet with the Leadership Team on each site and developing a parliament across LWF. All children have the opportunity to talk to senior staff on a regular basis and use these occasions to share their views.

Democracy is explained through assemblies and older students are encouraged to follow any current political issues.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days and through school assemblies. Students are taught the value and reasons behind laws that govern and protect us, the responsibilities that these involve and the consequences when laws are broken.

Individual Liberty

Within school, students are always actively encouraged to share their views and make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for students to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Students are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons.

Mutual Respect

Assemblies regularly cover ‘Respect’ and students have been part of discussions related to what this means and how it is shown, though the development of the LWF values. The school environment promotes respect for others and this is reiterated through our values and policies. When a member of the school team does something well, their achievement is celebrated within assemblies.
Tolerance of those of different Faiths and Beliefs

This is achieved through enhancing students’ understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. Themed days are planned throughout the year, to make sure that students are able to understand what life is like in different cultures.

PSHE and SMSC

PSHE is integrated into sessions every day, with each day starting with circle time to allow for discussions/debates to take place in a supportive restorative manner and ensure all students are ‘ready to learn’. PSHE is also taught both discreetly as well as opportunities that are exploited and built into multi-sensory experiential learning experiences that are reinforced and supported daily through discussion.

Significant dates in the religious and cultural calendar ensures that there is a focus, through assemblies and PSHE lessons on important cultural and religious festivals and commemorative days.  Both schools within the federation also hold cultural days, to support students to be amerced within cultural experiences. 

Curriculum Organisation:

Our curriculum is organised in to four bands, in line with EHC outcomes:

  • Communication and Interaction
  • Cognition and Learning
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health
  • Sensory and Physical

The curriculum and learning environment is offered at these four different levels depending upon: the needs and ability of the individual student; the subject/scheme of work being taught; the overall needs of the group and equality of access to our specialist facilities.
